Planets DIY

If you're looking for a fun and creative way to teach your kids (or yourself!) about the planets, then making a DIY solar system mobile is a fantastic idea! And the best part is, you can easily achieve this using materials you probably already have at home.

To start off, you'll need some cardboard. You can use an old box or cardboard scraps - anything that is flat and sturdy. Use a compass to draw out circles for each of the planets, matching their respective sizes. If you don't have a compass, you can always use household items to trace around, such as plates or cups like I did.

Once you have your circles all cut out, it's time to get coloring! Use markers, colored pencils, or even paints to carefully color each circle to represent the different planets. You can get as creative as you want with this part - adding swirls and patterns to represent the gas giants, or using glitter to represent the stars.

After the planets are all colored and dried, poke a small hole at the top of each circle and thread some string or yarn through. Tie each planet up at various lengths, with the sun in the center and the planets spaced out accordingly.

Finally, tie the other ends of the strings to a wire or a wooden stick, creating a mobile structure. Hang it up in a space where it can spin freely, and you've got yourself a DIY solar system mobile!

This project not only provides a fun and hands-on way to learn about the planets, but it also serves as a visually appealing decoration for a bedroom or playroom. As it spins and twirls, the planets will come to life, captivating anyone who sees it.

Furthermore, the process of creating the solar system mobile can be a great educational activity. You can discuss the unique characteristics of each planet as you color and hang them, providing an interactive learning experience. This hands-on approach is not only engaging but can also help deepen understanding and appreciation for the solar system.

So, whether you're a parent looking for a creative way to teach your kids about astronomy, or just looking for a unique craft project, or party decorations like me, making a DIY solar system mobile out of cardboard and markers is a fun and affordable option. Get ready to watch the planets orbit and spin as the solar system comes to life right in your own home!
